Scouting

Because Art For Humanity is an all volunteer organization, there is much to do for Scouts of all ages and gender. We currently have Scouts working on Eagle, Gold, Silver and Bronze Award projects. In addition many of the youngest scout troops are collecting used shoes and other needed items.

If your troop is interested in beginning a shoe collection, here are the basic details.

1. All types of good shoes are needed……dress, casual, athletic,
children, adults, heels, sandals, etc.  About the only styles not needed are house slippers and fur or fleece lined boots. The main limit is size. We do not need really large sizes. For men, size 11 is the largest we can use and size 10 for women.

2.  Shoes can be dropped off anytime 24/7 without notice on the front porch at 635 S. 25th St. Arlington, Va. 22202. We also have drop off sites in Leesburg, Lorton, Richmond, Vienna and Winchester. Contact us for those sites.

3.  No special packaging or sorting is needed…..plastic trash bags are fine. Just be sure that only pairs are sent and that pairs go together in the same bag.  Tying laces together is helpful but not necessary as long as pairs are together.

4.  We collect shoes 12 months a year…..so whenever is good for you is good for us.

5. If later you are looking for a follow-up project, in addition to shoes, we also need donations of good used sheets, towels, children/teen clothing as well as small and medium adult summer clothing. Toiletries are also needed.

6.  Groups outside of the metro Washington DC area normally send their boxes of shoes via US Mail.  Postage is surprisingly affordable. Just fill the boxes very full so as to optimize space. Small children’s shoes can go inside adult shoes for further space savings.  Or, contact us to see if we have another collection going on near you so that perhaps we can arrange a pickup. When several troops collect together, there are normally enough shoes that we can coordinate a pickup.
